Yarmouth Waterfront to Undergo Second Facelift

Yarmouth, Nova Scotia - April 9, 1996 - As part of the Yarmouth waterfront renewal, a second phase of the project will increase the area's tourism and economic development potential by linking various points of interest, including the Domtex Commercial Centre, along the waterfront. The project will create 29 permanent jobs plus other jobs during the construction.

Under the Canada/Nova Scotia COOPERATION Agreement on Economic Diversification, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) has contributed $1,265,600 and the Nova Scotia Economic Renewal Agency (NSERA) has funded $316,400 to construct a waterfront walkway system. The Town of Yarmouth and private investors have contributed the remaining $791,000 towards the project.

"An interesting, vibrant waterfront is one of the most sought-after commodities when considering economic development," said the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Secretary of State (ACOA and Veterans). "Yarmouth is a beautiful town, and there is no doubt that its improved waterfront will be the catalyst in attracting new development opportunities to the downtown core."

"Tourists and residents of Yarmouth will benefit from the waterfront improvements," said Richie Hubbard, MLA for Yarmouth, on behalf of the Honourable Robbie Harrison, Minister for the Nova Scotia Economic Renewal Agency. "And the commercial and industrial sections of the Town should profit from the economic spinoffs that will result from increased activity."

"This project is certainly welcome news, and is the type of development that Yarmouth's downtown core needs," said His Worship Charles Crosby, Mayor of the Town of Yarmouth.

In addition to the walkway, the Parker-Eakins Wharf will be reconstructed and the existing marina and tour boat berthage will be expanded.

Secretary MacAulay and MLA Hubbard also announced the commitment of $600,000 (split 80% federal and 20% provincial) for Phase II of the Domtex Commercial Centre. This involves necessary upgrades to the structural aspects of the former yarn mill plant to meet safety requirements. Phase II will create 25 permanent jobs and several temporary construction jobs. The renovation of the facility is expected to be completed by March 1997.

The Canada/Nova Scotia COOPERATION Agreement on Economic Diversification is a federal/provincial Agreement managed by ACOA and the NS Economic Renewal Agency.
